Wellington (Colorado) voters will elect a mayor and three town board members on April 6.
Six people met the March 5 deadline to file as candidates. Larry Noel, the incumbent mayor, is being challenged by Travis Vieira, a current town board member. Running for the three town board seats are incumbents Travis Stevens and Mike Steely and newcomers to local politics, Ernest Cienfuegos-Baca and Lloyd “Bill” Sullivan.
Noel, 54, is a Realtor working with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Fort Collins. He is seeking his third term as mayor.
Vieira, 37, is assistant manager at Main Street Market in Wellington. He is completing his first four-year term as a member of the town board of trustees.
Stevens, 35, is seeking re-election after serving one term on the town board. He is the owner of Stevens Insurance Agency in Wellington, which is part of Farmers Insurance Group.
Steely, 63, has served on the town board since 1995. He is the owner of Steely Trucking in Wellington.
Cienfuegos-Baca, 41, is running for elective office in Wellington for the first time. He owns Ernest Cienfuegos-Baca Agency of American Family Insurance, with an office in Fort Collins.
Sullivan, 37, is an on-call anesthetist at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. His family moved to Wellington in 2005.
Wellington residents are invited to a forum to question the candidates on March 17, starting at 7 p.m. in the Leeper Center. Candidates will have a time limit to answer questions presented through a moderator. Those attending may submit additional questions as the forum progresses.
Publishers of The Wellington are hosting the forum. To keep the forum running smoothly, it will help to have some questions submitted in advance to info@thewellingtonweekly.com. Questions should be written so that they apply to all candidates.
The mayor and town trustees serve four-year terms. The mayor is paid $100 per month. Town trustee is an unpaid position. The board meets twice a month, and board members also serve on various town committees such as planning commission and community activities commission. The full board makes up the town’s library board.
Voters may cast their ballots between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on April 6 at the Leeper Center.
